Pipp and Guy Gillette
grew up on the East Coast where they were exposed to a variety of musical styles, from
Broadway tunes to the cowboy ballads of Cisco Houston. But each summer they traveled to
Lovelady, Texas, to visit their grandfather, Hoyt Porter, who started what is now known as
the Gillette Ranch in 1912 . During the summers their grandfather taught them about
ranching traditions and the lore of the west. During their teenage years they began
singing and playing guitar, and after high school they began a 15-year career as
musicians. By 1983, however, they realized that their grandfather's ranch needed
attention, and they both moved to Lovelady to focus on the family cattle business. Since
that time they have continued to play music, incorporating their life-long interest in the
history of the west and its music with their own experiences working on the ranch.Pipp
and Guy Gillette have done it again. Another outstanding CD, Live from the
Camp ST. Cafe & Store, of American Folk music ranging from Irish, Scottish
and Cowboy songs to American Blues. With plaintive vocal harmonies and
instrumentation ranging from resonator guitars to Bohdrans and bones, bones from the ribs
of one of their own cows of course, The Gillette Brothers have extended their continued
effort to preserve classic folk music of the American West. |
