"...Last but not
least, Hamel's songwriting might be the most
appealing thing about the disc. "Babylon," a song constructed out of old nursery
rhymes and proverbs, and "Peggy," which she built out of ballad plots and
commonplaces, are novel uses of the tradition. Both are daring attempts, and turned out to
be great songs. This is precisely the kind of innovation that is itself traditional, and
the kind we see the least. Her thoroughly original song "Lonesome Heaven" is
sweet, sad, and a little cryptic, reminding me of 10,000 Maniacs in the Wishing Chair era
- high praise indeed!"
