Joe Denson was
born into music. Both his parents and
grandparents were professional musicians. Joe
started playing guitar at the early age often. By
the time he was in the 7th grade he was playing
in local clubs and colleges. His 7th grade band
director, a renowned concert violinist in his own
right, called Joe a true virtuoso.
Even today Smokin' Joe Denson is recognized by
his peers as well as audiences all over as a
master guitarist and composer. His sound and
style has been described as Jimi Hendrix meets
Joe Satriani. Every decade since the 60s Joe has
played the major clubs and concert halls. In the
late 60s it was the infamous Catacombs club and
"Love Street" where he backed up such
bands as: Canned Heat, Blue Cheer, Steppenwolf.
Also there was the annual "Battle of the
Bands" at the Albert Thomas convention
center.
On September 18th, 1970 Friday night, the day
Jimi Hendrix died Smokin' Joe along with other
local musicians played tribute in concert at the
"Of Our Own" concert hall.
The 70s took Joe from Houston's "Liberty
Hall " to Hollywood's infamous "Whiskey
Ago Ago".
The 80s were spent mainly doing session work.
Doing this enabled Joe to concentrate more on his
song writing. Composing since the 60s you can bet
his writing capabilities have been honed to a
fine degree.
The 80's; Smokin' Joe was back in the saddle with
his 3 Piece band "Shogun". Playing in
and out of town a lot was Joe's passion. No
matter what size a club or hall is, big or small
you can bet" Smokin' Joe Denson" will
be burnin' down the house with his own brand of
progressive Rock n' Roll.
