 It is an exciting moment when a
fresh voice takes the stage - better still when
the voice has something to say. In that moment is
bravery and creation. What makes a good
songwriter? For me it is someone who avoids
cliché and formula, yet still finds a natural
style in their expression. That's my taste. And I
believe in a few conspiracy theories - that
mainstream media holds up a hoop of sameness that
success-bound artists must jump through.It's not fair that every female singer-songwriter gets lumped together with Jewel and Sarah McLachlan, so forget I mentioned their names. I suppose if someone forced me to make a big name comparison, it would be Ani DiFranco. Laura Veirs undresses the famous super-heroine subject in her beautifully hilarious "Star Panties."
